NAC Breda Shopping Centre, Holland
In cooperation with Lode Havermans Architecten & Grosfeld Van der Velde Architecten
Brief: Create a complex of 16100m² comprising a hypermarket and space for retail along with office space.
Design: We designed a two-storey shopping centre with a central square atrium and three entrances, each in line with one side of the central square creating easy flow of movement within the complex. On the ground floor we placed the large supermarket and individual shop spaces for other retailers. The second floor holds the extra shop spaces along with a substantial office space and parking with a second main entrance linking the parking and shopping spaces. We regulated the facades of the individual shop spaces, ensuring visual coherence even with a variety of retailers in residence.
On the façade we used an omega profile, the top 8m in light grey steel, perforated to reveal a flat layer in a differing tone behind it. As the centre is 100m in length, this creates a visually fascinating effect with light. The Shopping Centre is situated next to the NAC Breder Football Stadium so the reaming 2m at the base of the face is ‘hooligan proof’ using the same omega profile as the rest of the façade but in concrete.
