BAM-House, Holland - Interior Design, Product Design
Brief: Two separate offices of Holland’s largest Contractor, Royal BAM Group are merging into one 7000m2 regional headquarters in The Hague. Create a new identity for the interior of this regional office and a cohesive look that will bind the three different divisions of BAM that are to be united under this one roof.
Design: We developed and introduced a central colour scheme to the BAM Office. A horizontal lined sequence, based on the Fibonacci sequence, in the BAM colour palette of yellow, poppy red and white acted a cohering motif to bind the aesthetic of the office’s interior. In communal spaces we used 100% wool felt wall hangings to express the motif, layering the felt to create the sequence of lanes. This created visual and textual variation while simultaneously softening acoustics and visually linking different areas within the building.
To complement the bold lines and colours of the central scheme we developed our Raising Lantern. A series of varying lampshades, with multiple light sources, stacked to create towering sculptures of light reaching up to 2.70m in communal areas. We produced a corresponding pendant light to hang above the tables in the same areas to unify the space.
We designed floor plans for the working environment on each floor consisting of both open and closed workplaces. Closed workplaces with full glass fronts ran along on the side of the building, punctuated by the elevators, main staircases and toilets. The remaining floor space was devoted to open plan workplaces. We designed pods to house and hide office storage and support facilities. Placed within the open plan workspace, these pods also served to segment the space and create some sheltered work places within the open plan environment. We spiced up the neutral tones of this space by applying variations of the colour scheme on the sides of the pods, occasionally placing series of 60 cm high white flowerpots in front of the pods to further diversify the working environment.
